The 10th Annual CAIA Roseau Youth Hockey Auction and Golf Tournament was held Friday, July 27th and Saturday, July 28th at Oakcrest Golf Club in Roseau. This years event was a huge success with a record turn out at Friday nights fish fry and auction and a nearly a full field of teams for Saturday's golf tournament.
The events got underway on Friday night with a Walleye Fish Fry and was followed by the Auction with the Larry, Les & Laverne (Wormy) Voll handling the auctioneering duties. A wide range of items were auctioned off which was highlighted by several 2007 State High School Hockey Champion items including a priceless framed autographed photograph of the Rams celebrating their championship at final buzzer of the championship game against the Grand Rapids Thunderhawks. Over 80 items were auctioned off including autographed major league baseballs, a Rams state championship banner, golf vacations and several game worn jerseys.
On Saturday the golf events took center stage with a shotgun start at 9 am. This years tournament featured 35 5-person teams vying for this years crown with the team of Rich Anderson, Tom Nikunen, Randy Mason, Cory Vacura and Brad Zoeller walking away with the men's title scoring a impressive 18 under par 53 for a net 46.5. The women's division had Christine Adrian's team successfully defending their title shooting a net 48.2. Christine's team consisted of Christine Adrian, Shelly LaPlante, Michelle Hagen, Dawn Hedlund and Celena Jensen. This year we gave away a 1989 Ford Escort along with a mystery prize which was a new set of Powerbilt irons on hole #10 and Dean Byfuglien walked away with the prize.
This years putting tournament was won by Andy Jensen defeating Terry Greenhoe in the final and in a new event this year Kerry Taylor was victorious in the Long Drive Contest banging out a winning drive that was estimated at a whopping 360 yards.
Overall, this years event was a tremendous success earning over $16,000.00 with all proceeds going to the Roseau Youth Hockey Arena Fund. A very special thank you to all those that donated auction items and door prizes as well as to the 39 local businesses that were in the hole sponsorship club This event wouldn't be possible without the volunteers that helped with the various events. Thank you to all of you that participated in the weekend events and look forward to seeing you all next year.
