Rams Section 8AA Champions

The Rams came into Wednesday nights Section 8AA championship with aspirations of making their 33rd state tournament appearance but to do that they would have to beat defending section champion and #1 seed Moorhead Spuds. The teams split the regular season series each winning on opponents ice but this time it would be on neutral ice at the Ralph Engelstad Arena in Thief River Falls.

The key to this game going in was getting a quick start and solid goaltending, the Rams got both as Travis Connell opened the scoring at 1:07 of the opening period as he picked up a cross-ice pass of the boards from Kevin Erickson and sending a quick wrist shot on net that appeared to surprise starting goaltender Michael Bitzer giving the Rams a 1-0 lead. The Rams continued taking the play to the Spuds throughout the period nearly doubling them in shots on goal for the period at 13-7 and a 1-0 lead after one period of play.

At 5:31 of the second period the Rams extended their lead to 2-0 while on the power play, senior Cole Kostrzewski scored on a one timer from Adam Knochenmus. The second assist was credited to Rams starting goaltender Ethan Kvidt. The two goal lead was cut back to one goal quickly just :16 seconds later as Tyler Larson scored for the Spuds on a one time feed from Brandon Macleod. Both teams went scoreless the remainder of the period with the Rams holding onto a 2-1 lead after two periods.

The tight defensive play continued in the third period with either team able to capitalize on scoring chances. Both teams exchanged single penalties in the period including a too many men on the ice minor on the Rams in the closing minutes that the Rams successfully killed off. Moorhead pulled Spud goaltender Bitzer for the extra attacker with just over a minute remaining but was unable to gain entry to the Rams zone as the aggressive play of the Ram forecheckers kept the play deep in the Spud zone and preserving the 2-1 victory. Rams goaltender Ethan Kvidt finished the game with 25 saves in picking up the win while the Spuds netminder Michael Bitzer finished with 28 saves in the loss.

With the win the win the Rams enter state tournament play with a 22-5-1 record and will open play next Thursday against an opponent to be determined after the remaining section finals are completed and the coaching seedings are released.

Tigers Down the Rams in OT

The Rams came into Saturday's game with St. Cloud Tech knowing if they had any hope at getting the second seed in the section they needed a solid effort and a win against a very scrappy Tiger team. The Rams defeated the Tigers in St. Cloud just one week earlier 3-1. They would also need help from Moorhead as they traveled to Brainerd to take on the Warriors in another key Section 8AA contest. With a win over the Warriors the Spuds would sweep the season series and open the door that possibly the Rams could sneak into the number two seed for tournament play that starts next week.

The Rams got on the board first in the opening period when Shane Omdahl scored a highlight reel behind the back goal at 14:15 giving the Rams a 1-0 lead with loan assist going to Adam Knochenmus. The remainder of the period went scoreless with the Rams outshooting the Tigers 15-9.

It didn't take long for the Tigers get on the board early in the second just :55 seconds in when Brandon Reinholz scored his first of three on the afternoon evening the score up at 1-1. Adam Knochenmus regained the Rams lead scoring a shorthanded goal on a breakaway at 2:43 and the Rams lead 2-1. The lead held up until late in the period when Reinholz recorded his second of the game at 13:27 and the teams went to the locker room tied at 2-2. After two periods of play the Rams held a 25-7 edge on shots on goal.

The third period the Tigers took their first lead of the game as Reinholz completed his hat trick at 2:51 and a 3-2 lead. The Tiger lead would last until the 11:51 mark when the Rams Josh Erickson converted a TJ Erickson rebound past Tiger goaltender Al Patten knotting the game back up at 3-3. Just when it appeared we may be heading to overtime the Tigers scored on a fluke goal and the puck was played deep into the Rams zone forcing Rams netminder Ethan Kvidt to attempt to clear the puck out of the zone but partially fanned with Ryan Heaton intercepting the clearing attempt and scoring into the Rams empty net. The goal put the hometown crowd into a state of shock as they found their Rams trailing 4-3 with just 1:52 remaining in regulation. In a desperate attempt to get the equalizer in the closing second and Rams goaltender Kvidt pulled for the extra attacker, senior Cole Kostrzewski scored on a flurry in front of Patten tying the game at 4-4 with just :07 seconds remaining and sending the game to overtime. For the third straight period the Rams outshot the Tigers this time 14-3 for the period and 39-19 for the game.

The overtime period unfortunately didn't last long as the Tigers winning goal came on another fluky play as Brandon Anderson beat a startled Kvidt after forechecking deep in the Rams zone and sending a Ram defensive giveaway into the Rams net giving the Tigers their biggest victory of the year.

Rams goaltender Ethan Kvidt finished the game with 15 saves on 20 Tiger shots while the Tigers Al Patten picked up the win stopping 35 of 39 shots.

With the loss the Rams finish the regular season section play with a 4-3 record and drop to 17-5-1 overall. After a busy weekend on the road in Brainerd and St. Cloud the Rams had to turn around on Monday and hit the road once as they traveled to Bemidji for another big section game against the Lumberjacks. This was a make-up game from earlier in January originally scheduled to be played at Nymore Arena but was played at the John Glas Fieldhouse on the Bemidji State Campus in front of a large crowd.

With both teams exchanging scoring opportunities the first half of the opening period it was Rams senior Adam Knochenmus getting the Rams on the board first as he beat Jacks goaltender Axel Osborn at 10:30 of the period with the loan assist going to Shane Omdahl. At the 11:32 mark of the second period the Lumberjacks scored giving them their only lead of the night at 2-1 when Jordan Heller scored on the powerplay with Adam Knochenmus off for holding. The Rams would return the favor picking up a late goal also on the powerplay at 15:18 of the period when Rams senior defensemen Trevor Baumgartner scored on a shot from the point getting past goaltender Osborn. Omdahl and Knochenmus picked up the assists on the goal closing out the scoring for the period with the game all knotted up at 2-2.

The Rams coming into this game had outscored opponents in third periods 33-19 and found themselves in a dogfight tied at 2-2. The Rams added to those statistics early in the third period as senior Cole Kostrzewski scored at 2:48 with Knochenmus and Omdahl picking up helpers and giving the Rams a 3-2 lead. At 5:38 Taylor Hedlund scored after making a nifty move along the near boards and beating Osborn who appeared to get a piece of it with this catcher but somehow found the back of the net and the Rams now led 4-2. Kevin Erickson and TJ Erickson were credited with the assists on the goal. Just as it appeared the Rams were going to start to walk away with this one the Lumberjacks scored when Brady Devescovi converted a Jesse Nemgar rebound goal past Rams netminder Ethan Kvidt and Jacks had pulled back to within one at 4-3. Things got very interesting late in the period when the Lumberjacks went on the powerplay with just 3:11 remaining in regulation after Adam Knochemnus was signaled down on a roughing call. Rams senior goaltender Ethan Kvidt was called upon to make the save of the game with just :45 seconds remaining the Lumberjacks Rylee Curb picked up a loose puck just inside the Rams zone going in all alone on Kvidt on a breakaway but Ethan got the right pad on it to preserve the hard fought victory.

For the game the Rams Ethan Kvidt finished with 21 saves on 24 Lumberjack shots while Axel Osborn turned aside 24 of 28 Ram shots. With the win the Rams improve to 16-4-1 overall and 4-2 in section play. Roseau is looking for a series sweep of the prowlers as they defeated them back on December 1st 6-3 which was the first game of the season.

Rams Split on 8AA Road Trip

The biggest weekend series of the year had the Rams traveling to Central Minnesota for a two game series with Section 8AA foes Brainerd Warriors and the St. Cloud Tech Tigers. The Rams first opponent on Friday night was the Warriors from Brainerd sporting an impressive 16-2 record with their only loss in the section coming via the Moorhead Spuds.

In front of a capacity crowd at the Brainerd Area Civic Center the partisan Warrior crowd base was anxious for a upset and looking for their first victory over the Rams in school history.

The first period had the Warriors getting on the board first Matt Pohlkamp scoring and a hard wrist shot beating Rams netminder Ethan Kvidt over the right shoulder putting the Warriors up 1-0 at the 2:32 mark of the first period. The Warrior lead didn't last long as Ram junior Shane Omdahl intercepted an errant Warrior pass just inside the Brainerd zone and went in alone on goaltender Reid Mimmack and beat him with a nifty backhander just under the crossbar. The Rams took the lead at 11:15 of the period with the Rams Taylor Hedlund and Cole Kostrzewski entering the Warrior zone on a 2-on-1 Hedlund took the original shot but the rebound came straight out to Kostrzewski who put it past Mimmick giving the Rams the 2-1 lead. At the 6:32 mark of the second period with the Warriors on the power play Warrior leading scorer Josh Archibald scoring an unassisted goal beating Kvidt to the near side tying the game at 2-2. The goal sent the voictrious crowd into a frenzy giving the Warriors a huge momentum lift. Just over three minutes later, things became even crazier as Bret Jenkins scored with a tremendous effort beating the Ram defencemen to the puck by diving and getting a stick on the puck directing towards the net. Rams goaltender Ethan Kvidt tried to poke check but the puck went over his right should and into the net. The goal gave the Warriors a 3-2 lead and took that to the locker room with the lead after two periods of play.

The third period the Rams tried desperately to get the equalizer but Warriors netminder Reid Mimmack made same big saves down the stretch with the Rams skating with an extra attacker the final 1:30 remaining in regulation to preserve the victory. The Rams goaltender Ethan Kvidt finished the game with 20 saves taking the loss while the Warriors Reid Mimmack finished with 36 saves in picking up the win.

Saturday morning the Rams made the trip south to St. Cloud to take on the St. Cloud Tech Tigers for another Section 8AA key matchup. The Tigers looking to avenge a tough overtime loss to the Rams in last year’s section semi-final that had the Rams defeating Tech 3-2. The home ice for the Tigers in the National Hockey Center on the campus of St. Cloud State University which is a rink the Rams have played very well in over the years.

The first period seen both teams go scoreless producing a combined 14 shots on net with solid goaltending on both ends of the ice sheet from Rams goaltender Ethan Kvidt and Tech’s goaltender Al Patten each with 7 saves.

The second period both teams remained scoreless until the 15:54 mark of the period when Rams leading scorer Shane Omdahl scored on a powerplay over the left shoulder of Tiger netminder Patten. Adam Knochenmus and Justin Anderson picked up helpers on the goal. The period would come to a close with the Rams leading 1-0 after two complete periods. The Rams had a slight lead in shots for the game 18-13.

The third period the Rams converted on the powerplay once again this time senior Kevin Erickson notched his 8th goal of the season beating Patten on a one timer feed from Josh Erickson. Senior defensemen Tim Tesarek picked up the second assist on the goal coming at the 7:05 of the period. The Rams held onto the two goal lead until the 14:17 mark when the Tigers Brandon Reinholz beat Rams goaltender Ethan Kvidt closing to lead to 2-1. With the Tigers in possession of the puck in the Rams zone in the final minute of regulation, goaltender Al Patten tried to get off the ice for the extra attacker but the Rams regained possession of the puck forcing him to stop and get back to the net but despite a diving effort Cole Kostrzewski was able to find the net giving the Rams a 3-1 victory.

Rams Win Big Over the Warriors

Monday night the Rams came into the Roseau-Warroad match-up looking to avenge an earlier 5-2 loss to the Warriors in Roseau. That was a game they gave up a goal with 2:07 remaining in regulations to followed by two enter netters to seal the deal. The difference this time if the Rams were going to be victorious they would have to do it the the Warriors home ice at the Gardens.

For the Rams to be successful in this game it would be critical to get off to a good start and senior forward Taylor Hedlund did exactly that scoring just :43 seconds into the opening period on a Zach Johnson rebound with Justin Anderson picking up the second assist. Hedlund would add to the Rams lead just over five minutes later at the 5:43 mark when he scored his second of the night on another rebound high in the slot after the original shot from Cole Kostrzewski and the Rams led 2-0. The Warriors weren't about to lie down as they came storming back just :16 seconds later as Aaron Rasmussen notched his first of two on the night scoring at 6:01 with Brock and David Nelson picking up the assists and the Rams lead was cut to 2-1. With the Rams forward junior Mike Johnson serving a minor for hooking the Warriors tied the game at 2-2 when Rasmussen picked up his second goal of the night. The period ended the way it started with these two northern powers tied with the Rams having a slight edge in shots outshooting the Warriors for the period 9-7.

The second period has been the best period for the Rams all season and that was evident again as they scored three unanswered goals in the third period. The first came from the stick of Kevin Erickson just :35 seconds into the period with assists going to Adam Knochenmus and Shane Omdahl. The second was a highlight reel goal from junior Travis Connell making a nice move on Warrior goaltender Andy Foster. The unassisted goal coming just :20 seconds after the Erickson goal. At 9:41 of the period with the Warriors Brock Nelson off for cross-checking Rams leading scorer Shane Omdahl scored a wicked wrister over the shoulder of Foster giving the Rams a 5-2 lead and closed out the scoring for the period. Knochenmus and Kevin Erickson recorded assists on the goal.

The third period had teams each taking single penalties early in the period before the Rams Chase Broten scored on a nice backhander at the 10:12 mark with assists credited to Josh Erickson and Mike Johnson. Keeping the Warriors go to man Brock Nelson off the board isn't an easy task and that proved to be the case as he scored a powerplay goal at the 12:21 mark to close the Rams lead back to three goals at 6-3. Just over three minutes later at 15:38 the Rams Josh Erickson scored on a perfect one timer feed from Mike Johnson from behind the Warriors net and beat goaltender Foster giving the Rams the 7-3 final margin of victory and a split on the season series.

The Rams goaltender Ethan Kvidt finished the game with 23 saves on 26 Warrior shots while the Warriors Andy Foster kicked out 18 of 25 Rams shots. With the win the Rams hold a 93-60-4 record against their arch rivals to the east dating back to 1945.

Even with the two schools playing in different classes has diminished the rivalry from what it once was you couldn’t really see that Thursday night. All hockey fans, scouts and media personalities were treated to yet another dandy between these two storied programs in a game that wasn’t decided until the closing minutes.

The Warriors jumped out to a quick lead scoring at 5:21 of the opening period when Warriors leading scorer Brock Nelson banged home a Brett Hebel rebound past Rams netminder Ethan Kvidt to take the early lead. Rams senior forward Kevin Erickson tied the game just 4 minutes, nineteen seconds later as he knocked in a rebound goal past Warriors goaltender Shawn Storey to send both squads to the locker room tied a 1-1. The Rams had a slight edge of shots for the period outshooting the Warriors 8-7.

The second period the play opened up as both teams combined for 23 shots in the period but both goaltenders were sharp keeping the period scoreless until 2:06 remaining in the period. With the Rams Lyle Norman just returning to the ice after serving a hooking penalty, the Warriors Aaron Rasmussen picked up loose puck along the boards and circled to the high slot and sent a hard wrister past Kvidt regaining the one goal lead at 2-1. The Rams Ethan Kvidt was the busier of the two goaltenders facing 13 Warrior shots while Shawn Storey kicked out all 10 he faced in the period. With the Warriors leading 2-1 after two periods, this would setup for an exciting third period of action.

The Rams came into the third period trailing by a goal but failed to convert on a couple of excellent opportunities early in the third but at 7:34 of the period they caught the Warriors on a 2 – on – 1. The Rams leading scorers Shade Omdahl and Trevor Baumgartner entered the zone with only one defender pack with Omdahl giving Baumgartner a perfect goal mouth feed to tie the game up at 2-2. The game would remain tied until 14:53 of the period when Adam Shaugabay performed his heroics tipping a Carson Gray blast from the point past Kvidt giving the Warriors their third lead of the game at 3-2. The Rams pulled Kvidt with just over one minute remaining for an extra attacker but the plan backfired as Shaugabay recorded his second of the night beating a Rams defenseman to the puck sending it into an empty net. The Warriors Brock Nelson picked up his second goal of the night just thirty five seconds later converting again on an empty netter and giving the Warriors a 5-2 victory.

With this lose the Rams drop to 12-2-1 overall and lose their first game in conference play and now are 5-1 in the Mariucci Conference. The Warriors improve to 12-2 overall and 3-1 inside the conference. Next up for the Rams they face the Buffalo Bison Saturday afternoon at 3 pm at Memorial Arena in their first Section 8AA contest since defeating the Moorhead Spuds back on December 15th.

Rams Down Greenwave 3-1

The Rams received a pair of goals from Josh Erickson and Shane Omdahl notched his 19th of the season to pace the Rams to a 3-1 win against the East Grand Forks Greenwave at East Grand Forks. Senior netminder Ethan Kvidt who was solid between the pipes for the Rams turned aside 17 of 18 shots for the night while Greenwave goaltender Hunter Aubol finished with 25 saves on 28 Ram shots.

Next up for the Rams they face the Warrior Warriors at Memorial Arena on Thursday night with game time set for 7:30 pm. With the win the Rams improve to 12-1-1 on the season and 5-0 in Mariucci conference play.

Rams Lose in Shootout

Going into Thursday nights game with the Red River Roughriders you knew that the Riders would give the Rams all they wanted and more. Both Grand Forks teams traditionally play the Rams very tough especially on home ice.

It was evident this would be the case Thursday as the Riders took a 2-0 lead to the dressing room after one period of play scoring two late first period goals. This coming after the Rams had the better edge of play for most of the opening period. The Riders two first period goals came from Jordan Love and Jon Lizotte.

The second period the Rams and leading scorer Shane Omdahl came storming back scoring goals at 2:20 and 8:19 of the period tying the game back up at 2-2 after two periods of play. It was Omdahl's 8th and 9th goals of the season. The Rams held a 20 - 11 shots on goal lead after two periods.

Entering the third period the Rams had new life but that all changed again at the 6:04 mark of the period when Riders leading scorer Jake LaDouceur scored to regain the lead at 3-2. The back and forth scoring continued just over two minutes later when Omdahl finished off his hat trick blistering a shot just under the crossbar and tying the game back up at 3-3. That goal seemed to give the Rams the jump they were looking for as they responded just :52 seconds later as Kevin Erickson fired a shot that rebounded off Trevor Baumgartner who was positioned low in the slot and redirected past Riders sophomore netminder Bryan Nies. The goal gave the Rams their first lead of the game at 4-3. The Rams played with the lead until the 13:12 mark, with the Riders sustaining pressure deep in the Rams zone Casey Fugleberg cashed in sending a backhander past Rams goaltender Ethan Kvidt tying the game up once again at 4-4. Neither team was able to regain the lead after regulation sending the game into the 8-minute overtime.

Riders goaltender Nies was the busier of the two goaltenders in the extra frame facing 6 Ram shots while Kvidt faced only the one Rider shot. The tournament tying breaking procedure called for a five person shootout with head coaches picking their shooters. The Rams had the opportunity to finish this one off taking a 2-1 lead after Adam Knochenmus and Cole Kostrzewski both scored it left the Riders down to their final shooter in the original 5 person shooting list and he beat Kvidt sending this one into extra shooters. After both teams leading scorers (Omdahl & LaDouceur) were again stopped the Riders Casey Fugleberg scored forcing the Rams to score to extend the shootout but the Riders netminder Nies stood tall stopping the crafty Knochenmus with a nice left pad save giving the Riders the win. Nies finished the game with 27 saves on 31 Ram shots while the Rams Kvidt finished with 15 saves on 19 Rider shots.

Officially the game goes down as a 4-4 tie but with the win the Riders now advance to the semi-final tonight at 8:30 facing the Grafton-Park River Spoilers after they defeated Bismarck High Demons 4-1 in the night cap. The Rams will now move over to Purpur Arena and take on the Demons at 3:15 pm in the consolation bracket.

Rams skate to a 4 - 1 victory over the Spuds Tuesday night at the Moorhead Sports Center. Rams Shutout the Bluejackets

Rams senior forward Adam Knochenmus collected a first period hat trick along with additional first period goals from Kevin Erickson and Shane Omdahl to pace the Rams to a 6-0 shutout victory over the visiting Hibbing Bluejackets on Saturday afternoon. Omdahl picked up his second of the afternoon in the third period to close out the scoring. It was the first shutout for the Rams on the year with senior Ethan Kvidt picking up the victory finishing with 12 saves.

Over the past two games the Rams have outshot their opponents in the third period 26-1 while outscoring opponents 4-0. In another interesting tid bit, the Rams forward Adam Knochenmus has a hat trick in three consecutive games and is co-leader in goals scored for the state (11) with Joey Benik of Saint Francis. Rams junior forward Shane Omdahl leads the state in overall scoring with 20 points.

With the win the Rams improve to 4-1 on the season and face their biggest rival in Section 8AA as they travel to Moorhead on Tuesday to face the Spuds. Game time is set for 6 pm following the Ram girls game versus the Spuds scheduled to start at 4 pm. Both games can be heard on 1410 KRWB and online with the Minnesota Sports Broadcast Network at http://www.mnsportsnetwork.com/ on channel 2 with Brad "Z-Man" Zoeller and myself bringing you the action.

Rams Route the Greenwave

The Rams goal scoring spree continued on Thursday as the Rams scored multi-goal games from seniors Kevin Erickson (2), Cole Kostrzewski (2), and Adam Knochenmus (3) on the way to a very solid 12-2 victory over the visiting East Grand Forks Greenwave. Other Ram goal scorers included career firsts from Chase Broten, Ryan Leverington, Josh Erickson and Lyle Norman. Junior Travis Connell had the other Ram marker. Ethan Kvidt getting his fourth straight start between the pipes for the Rams picked up his third win on the season facing 24 Greenwave shots. Rams now improve to 3-1 on the season and face the Hibbing Bluejackets Saturday afternoon at 3 pm.

Rams Down Totino-Grace 9-4

After the tough loss on Friday night the Rams had a tough task of coming back on Saturday with an afternoon matchup with the Totino-Grace Eagles.

The green and white looked a little sluggish early in the period as the Eagles got on the board first when Mike Parnell beat Rams goaltender Ethan Kvidt while skating with the man advantage at 5:28 of the opening period. The goal seemed to kick start the Rams as Adam Knochenmus notched his first of three on the afternoon on the powerplay just two minutes after the Eagle goal. The period ended with both teams tied at1-1.

The Rams opened the game up in the second period scoring four times in the first 9 minutes of the period getting a pair of goals from Knochenmus and Trevor Baumgartner and a single tally from Mike Johnson. Mike Parnell and TJ Roo notched markers for the Eagles. After two periods of play the Rams held a 6-3 lead.

After the Eagles Seth Noble picked up a powerplay goal early in the third, the Rams received goals from Chase Broten, Cole Kostrzewski and Shane Omdahl to close out the scoring and giving the Rams a solid 9-4 victory. The Rams starting goaltender Ethan Kvidt finished the night with 37 saves on 41 shots while the Eagles netminder Nick DeMuth finished with 27 saves on 36 shots.

With the win the Rams improve to 2-1 on the season and face the East Grand Forks Greenwave at home on Thursday, December 10th with game time set for 7:30 pm.

Rams Suffer Tough Loss to Blaine

The Rams played host to two metro area teams this weekend as they faced one of the top ranked teams in the state in the Blaine Bengals and the Totino-Grace Eagles.  Friday night’s contest the Rams faced the Blaine Bengals who are led by junior Nick Bjugstad and three year starting goaltender Danny Harper. The Rams without question come in as underdogs in this one with the Bengals bringing back several members from last year’s state tournament team.

The opening period the Rams showed that they weren’t going to let the Bengals role over them as they picked up the only goal of the period at the 6:01 mark with senior Cole Kostrzewski picking up his first of the year with assists going to Kevin Erickson and Trevor Baumgartner.

The second period the Rams extended their lead early in the period on a Shane Omdahl goal just 3:14 into the period but the Bengals responded quickly pulling back to one goal when Nick Bjugstad picked up this first of three goals on the night. Roseau shocked the nice crowd as they added to their lead with goals by Kevin Erickson and senior defensemen Jesse Braun to take a 4-1 lead at the midway point of the period.  Just as it looked like the Bengals might be in for a long night they narrowed the lead with an even strength goal from Brad Benson and a shorthanded goal and his second of the night by Bjugstad. That goal ended the scoring for a wild second period and Rams took a 4-3 lead into the locker room.

After a crazy goal scoring spree second period the third was totally opposite as the Rams played very well defensively defending the one goal lead even with the Bengals pressing at times. Just as it appeared the upset could be reality Bjugstad finished off the hattrick as he spit the Ram defensemen going in alone on Rams goaltender Ethen Kvidt tucking a backhander past the senior netminder and finishing off a Blaine comeback with just 2:12 remaining in regulation. Unfortunately for the Rams things would get worse after a questionable call the Rams went shorthand for the final minute and the Bengals Jonny Brodzinski knocked in the game winner with just :45 seconds remaining for a Bengal 5-4 victory. Rams goaltender Ethan Kvidt finished with 33 saves on 38 Bengal shots while Blaine’s Danny Harper had 28 saves on 32 Ram shots.

Omdahl Notches Hattrick in Rams Come Back Victory

At the 9:00 minute mark of the second period the Rams found themselves in a very undesirable position, trailing the Thief River Falls Prowler by a 3-1 count. On paper that isn’t an insurmountable lead but with one of the state’s top goaltenders in Zane Gothberg it is a tough road to haul. This is where the Rams top line of Shane Omdahl, Adam Knochenmus and Travis Connell come into the picture. This line accounted for all four Ram goals in the third period enroute to a 6-3 Mariucci Conference win.

The Rams Opened the scoring for the game at 4:16 of the opening period with one of the smoothest passing plays you will see as Adam Knochenmus gave a breakout pass from center ice sending Travis Connell and Shane Omdahl in alone on Prowler goaltender Zane Gothberg with Omdahl finishing off a unselfish perfect pass from Connell.  The Rams lead held for just under four minutes when Riley Soderstrom sent a back hander over the sprawled out Ram goaltender Ethan Kvidt who had poke checked the puck in an attempt to clear the puck but unfortunately ended up on Soderstrom’s stick. The period ended with the Prowlers having the edge in shots 12-8.

The second period the Prowlers took advantage on one of their two 5-on-3 power play opportunities when Mathew Audette sent a shot over the left shoulder of Kvidt with just 9 seconds remaining on the front end of the two man advantage.  With the Prowlers remaining on the powerplay, Soderstrom picked up this second of the night on a rebound goal as he was camped off the left post giving the Prowlers a 3-1 and putting all the momentum in the Prowler favor.  To make matters worse the Rams found themselves again two men short when two of their top defensemen in TJ Erickson and Zach Johnson where whistled down for penalties.  It appeared the Rams learned something from their first shorthanded experienced and seemed to turn a negative into a positive as they successfully killed off the penalties which appeared to give the Rams a lift. The closing two minutes of the period the Rams themselves would be the benefactor of a 5-on-3 opportunity.  With the two goal deficit and not wanting to let an opportunity to trim the Prowler lead to one the Rams first year head coach Andy Lundbohm called a timeout to gather his troops and put together a game plan for the closing seconds of the period. This would show to be a smart coaching decision as defensemen ripped a hard shot past Gothberg with :41 seconds remaining in the period to close the lead to 3-2.

The third period the Rams entered on the second half of the 2-man advantage and quickly converted just :34 seconds into the period as Omdahl notched his second of the game on a rebound goal tying the game at 3-3.  At 4:15 Adam Knochemus gave the Rams the lead that they wouldn’t surrender as he converted a Shane Omdahl pass and the Rams had their second lead of the game at 4-3. At the 11:59 mark of the period the scoring barrage continued on one of the nicest moves you will see at the high school level as Omdahl undressed Gothberg sliding a nifty backhander past the netminder. That finished off the scoring for Omdahl for the evening but not before picking up the hatty in the effort. It was only fitting that this line finish the scoring for the night with just 1:50 remaining in regulation Knochenmus  closed out the scoring for the game as he picked up his second of the night and complete a four goal third period outburst and a come from behind 6-3 win.
